Everything you need to know about using Couple Peacemaker effectively.

1 Getting Started

What exactly is Couple Peacemaker?

Couple Peacemaker is a free, browser-based tool that guides couples through a structured 5-step mediation process when they're in conflict. It helps partners communicate more effectively by providing breathing exercises, emotion identification tools, and communication scripts based on established psychological frameworks like the Gottman Method and Nonviolent Communication.

Think of it as a neutral coach sitting between you and your partner, helping you both cool down, understand each other's perspectives, and find common ground without either person feeling attacked or dismissed.

Do I need both partners to use this together?

Ideally, yes. Couple Peacemaker works best when both partners are willing to participate. The tool is designed for couples to use together during or after a conflict.

However, you can also use it solo to prepare for a difficult conversation. You can work through the steps on your own, use the emotion mapping tools to clarify your own feelings, and practice the communication scripts before discussing things with your partner.

If your partner isn't ready to try the tool, that's okay. Sometimes just one person changing how they communicate can shift the dynamic over time.

Is my information stored anywhere?

No. Your information stays on your device.

Couple Peacemaker is entirely client-side, meaning all processing happens in your browser. Nothing you type is ever sent to our servers. When you close the browser tab, all data is deleted.

The only thing that might be stored locally is your theme preference (dark mode or light mode), which is saved in your browser's local storage for convenience.

2 How It Works

What are the 5 steps?

The 5-step process is:

  1. Cool Down: Breathing exercises to lower everyone's emotional intensity
  2. Identify Emotions: Pinpoint what you're both actually feeling
  3. Map Needs: Understand the underlying needs driving those emotions
  4. Express & Listen: Use specific communication scripts to share perspectives
  5. Find Common Ground: Work toward mutual understanding and next steps

Each step builds on the previous one. You can't skip to step 4 without doing the groundwork first. This isn't a bug—it's intentional design. Rushing into "fixing" a conflict without cooling down first usually makes things worse.

How long does the process take?

It varies depending on how intense the conflict is and how much each person needs to share.

The breathing exercises in Step 1 typically take 3-5 minutes each. The full 5-step process for a moderate conflict usually takes 20-45 minutes. Some deeper issues might need multiple sessions to work through completely.

There's no timer and no rush. You can pause and come back whenever you're both ready to continue.

Can I use this on my phone?

Absolutely. Couple Peacemaker is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktop computers. You can even have one person on their phone and the other on a laptop—there's no requirement to be on the same device.

The tool simply displays different screens for each partner to share their perspective, then brings you together for the synthesis steps.

3 Effectiveness & Limitations

Does this actually work?

The techniques embedded in Couple Peacemaker are based on decades of relationship research. The Gottman Method, Nonviolent Communication, and Emotionally Focused Therapy have all been studied extensively and shown to improve relationship satisfaction in controlled trials.

That said, every couple is different. This tool isn't magic—it won't fix fundamental incompatibilities or deep-seated patterns that require professional intervention. Think of it as a communication aid, not a cure-all.

What it can do is help you pause before saying something you'll regret, understand your partner's perspective better, and have more productive conversations about difficult topics.

When should I NOT use this tool?

⚠ Important Safety Notice

Couple Peacemaker is not designed for situations involving domestic violence, abuse, controlling behavior, or active safety threats. If you feel unsafe in your relationship, please reach out to a professional or a domestic violence helpline.

This tool works best for:

  • Recurring arguments about specific topics (money, chores, parenting)
  • Communication breakdowns where both partners want to improve
  • General relationship maintenance and check-ins

It may not be appropriate for:

  • Active addiction or mental health crises
  • Infidelity recovery (this needs professional guidance)
  • Situations where one partner refuses to engage in good faith
  • Divorce or separation negotiations

Can this replace couples therapy?

No. Couple Peacemaker is an educational self-help tool, not a substitute for professional therapy.

Couples therapy involves a trained therapist who can read the dynamic between partners, identify deep patterns, provide personalized interventions, and hold both people accountable in ways an automated tool cannot.

If you have the resources, a good couples therapist is worth every penny. This tool can be a complement to therapy, or a stepping stone if you're not ready to see a therapist yet. But it cannot do what a qualified professional does.

4 Privacy & Security

Is my data safe?

Because nothing leaves your browser, there's no database that could be hacked or subpoenaed. What happens between you and your partner stays between you and your partner.

We use Google Analytics to understand how people use the site (which pages they visit, how long they spend), but this data is fully anonymized and cannot be traced back to individuals.

For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

Will my partner see what I type?

During the "Share Your Perspective" step, each partner enters their thoughts privately before they're revealed to the other person. This prevents the immediate defensiveness that can happen when someone hears criticism in real-time.

However, once you reveal your perspective, your partner will be able to read what you wrote. There's no way to unshare it, so please be mindful of what you write.

After completing the session, everything is deleted from the browser. There's no transcript saved anywhere.

5 Technical Questions

What browsers are supported?

Couple Peacemaker works on all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Brave. It requires JavaScript to be enabled.

For the best experience, we recommend using the latest version of your browser. Mobile Safari and Chrome on iOS/Android are fully supported.

Is there a mobile app?

Currently, there's no native mobile app. The web version works excellently on mobile browsers and doesn't require any downloads or account creation.

We're considering building native apps in the future, but there's no timeline yet. The web version will always remain free.

6 About the Science

  • Nonviolent Communication (NVC): Created by Marshall Rosenberg, focusing on compassionate communication
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, based on attachment theory
